Why Lighting Matters in Vision Inspection?
Lighting is a fundamental part of any machine vision inspection system. The right lighting setup directly affects image quality, inspection accuracy, and the reliability of automated defect detection. Four key factors should be considered:
1. Image Contrast
Proper lighting enhances the visual difference between a defect and the surrounding product surface. This makes features such as scratches, missing material, dents, and other surface imperfections easier for the vision system to identify.
2. Inspection Accuracy
Uniform and flicker-free lighting helps minimize variations in brightness across the inspection area. Consistent illumination provides clearer images and supports reliable dimensional measurement and visual inspection.
3. Defect Detection
Different lighting configurations are suited to different inspection requirements. Backlighting, coaxial lighting, and ring lighting can highlight specific features or defects. Selecting an unsuitable lighting method may reduce defect visibility and increase the risk of missed or incorrect detections.
4. Inspection Stability
A stable, constant-current light source helps reduce the influence of voltage fluctuations on image brightness. Consistent illumination is especially important for continuous, high-volume inspection, where stable imaging conditions help maintain consistent inspection results over time.
